Statistical Geneticist/Computational Biologist

MRC Band 4 Salary £29,663 – £35,399 pa inclusive
London W12
We are looking to recruit an experienced Statistical Geneticist/Computational Biologist to join the Integrative Genomics and Medicine Group of the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre (CSC) based on the Hammersmith Hospital Campus. The Integrative Genomics and Medicine Group is part of the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disorders Section and is headed by Dr Enrico Petretto.
The applicant will be required to work on an “integrative genomics” programme focused on data modeling and systems analysis using genetic, genomic and phenotypic data to identify risk factors for complex cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The emphasis is on “reverse engineering” gene regulatory networks to investigate the molecular mechanisms and pathways underlying complex traits and diseases such as cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension. The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between statisticians, bioinformaticians, geneticists, molecular biologists, and clinicians working with colleagues throughout the UK and more widely in Europe. The post will work closely with the Centre for Biostatistics at Imperial College, lead by Prof. Sylvia Richardson.
The Group has access to a 96 node computing cluster providing localised parallel computing facilities for intensive data processing and genomic sequence analysis tasks as well as state-of-the-art genomics facilities (including Affymetrix and Agilent platforms for microarray data generation, as well next-generation sequencing platforms: Roche, 454; Illumina, Genome Analyser and Applied Biosystems, SOLiDv3). The post-holder will take responsibility for data analysis/modeling and interpretation for the Groups research activities, in co-operation with other statistical geneticists and bioinformaticians at CSC, Imperial College London and other collaborating research centres.
The position requires a candidate with a PhD degree or equivalent experience in statistical genetics, computational biology or related areas, with expertise in analysis and modeling of highly dimensional datasets, including microarray data, next-generation sequencing, as well as excellent programming and communication skills. Please refer to the job description for a full breakdown of applicant requirements.
For informal enquiries regarding the post please contact Dr Enrico Petretto. (enrico.petretto@csc.mrc.ac.uk)
This post is a Career Development Fellowship to support post-doctoral scientists in early or changed career training and help establish them as a successful research scientist in their chosen field. It is initially a 3-year training and development post, which incorporates both scientific and transferable skills training.
The MRC Clinical Sciences Centre (CSC) is one of three MRC-funded research Institutes in the UK and is a Division of Imperial College London (IC), one of the UK’s internationally recognised University institutions. The CSC, situated on the Hammersmith Hospital campus of IC, employs over 400 researchers and fosters an interactive, interdisciplinary environment that provides a dynamic interface between leading basic and clinical research.
