Background information
The National Wine and Grape Industry Centre is seeking applications for the position of Research Fellow/Post Doctoral Fellow to contribute to a research team investigating aspects of grapevine diseases. The project will involve the establishment of laboratory, glasshouse and field experiments to investigate the epidemiology and management of non-Botrytis bunch rot of grapes. The project may also include aspects of disease modelling.
Responsibilities
Duties include planning and conducting both laboratory and field based experiments to investigate the epidemiology and management of bunch rot of grapes on both reproductive and vegetative structures; collecting, collating, analysing and interpreting data for reports and publications and participating in research meetings and contributing to the timely preparation of reports, extension activities and other publications. The appointee will also supervise technical assistants, casual staff and research students as required.
Essential Criteria
• PhD in plant pathology or a related area (for appointment as Research Fellow).
• Significant progress towards PhD in plant pathology or related area (for appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow).
• Demonstrated ability to plan and undertake field, laboratory and glasshouse trials in investigations of fungal pathogens of horticultural crops.
• Demonstrated research experience in plant disease epidemiology and detection.
• Demonstrated research track record including research publications in peer reviewed journals.
• Proven ability to communicate and work effectively under minimal supervision and in a team environment with shared facilities.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise technical staff and / or research students.
• Experience in standard computer software packages such as Microsoft Office and statistical packages.
• Current manual Drivers Licence.
• Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply equal opportunity principles.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply occupational health and safety principles.
Desirable Criteria
• Awareness of factors in grape and wine production including a knowledge of fungal pathogens of grapevines.
• A willingness to travel to vineyard field sites involving periods of time away from home.
• Experience in techniques used in the mathematical modelling of plant disease epidemics.
Conditions
3 year fixed term appointment
Salary range
Level A, Steps 6 to 8 – Postdoctoral Fellow: $58,888 – $63,212 per annum
Level B – Research Fellow: $66,540 – $79,018 per annum
