Description

AgResearch are looking to offer a career to a highly motivated scientist with an animal science related PhD and a strong research background in digestive physiology and ruminant nutrition from forage-based systems. You’ll have the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team comprising molecular biologists, forage and animal physiologists spanning several sections of AgResearch, with acknowledged expertise in biological science, committed to boosting the productivity of our bio-dependent economy.

Contributing to the formulation of new research and technology and product development programmes, you’ll undertake research to unravel how chemical and physical characteristics of the forage affect its digestion in the rumen, and how to modified these characteristics to achieve increases in the potential energy intake from forage.

To ensure that your research is always of the highest standard you’ll regularly publish results in recognised international journals, facilitating and presenting seminars to industry clients, relevant scientific conferences and, where appropriate, at industry workshops.

Knowledge/Background Required
An established research background in ruminant nutrition and in particular:

Knowledge and research capability in rumen function, digestive physiology and absorption processes from forage-based systems.
Desirable skills include: familiarity with mathematical models of rumen metabolism and digestion, knowledge of pastoral livestock production systems, understanding of repercussion of digestive processes on animal metabolic processes for production, familiarity with carbohydrate and nitrogenous composition of forages.
The ability to work as a team member; to work creatively and collaboratively to achieve results; to accept challenges and take on problems where solutions are poorly defined; to apply knowledge to produce novel solutions is essential.
Demonstrated ability to write and publish scientific papers and reports, good verbal skills and an aptitude for presenting research findings to diverse audiences including the farming community and commercial clients.

The Food, Metabolism & Microbiology Section is part of AgResearch’s Food & Textiles Group based at the Grasslands Research Centre in Palmerston North. The wider team of this project includes scientists from the Forage Improvement and Forage Biotechnologies Sections, and has a wide experience in the process of animal production from forages. The modern facilities include extensive animal facilities, surgery for preparation of surgically modified animals, instrumentation for analysis of stable and radio-isotopes, and a wide array of analytical instrumentation (GLC, HPLC, GC-MS). The campus in Palmerston North is home to technical and scientific expertise in forage production, rumen microbiology and animal metabolism. Palmerston North, a university city, is 30 km from the coast, 2 hours from ski fields, and 2 hours from Wellington. The AgResearch Grasslands campus is situated in pleasant rural surroundings with easy access to Palmerston North. The surrounding area offers many outdoor recreational opportunities.
