Job Description:

Post-doctoral position available to study cardiac gene networks in the simple chordate, Ciona intestinalis. Ciona embryos are well suited for investigating how gene networks regulate heart cell behavior. The sequenced Ciona genome contains single orthologs of vertebrate cardiac transcription factors and signaling pathway components. These genes direct heart development within a primordium composed of only 4-32 cells. Recently developed techniques permit precise, lineage specific manipulation of gene function and high resolution in-vivo analysis of the resulting effects on cell behavior and whole-genome transcription. Because Ciona is a member of our own phylum, these studies directly impact research on vertebrate heart formation. The PI is pursuing this research as a member of the Cardiovascular Research Program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. The program is composed of talented scientists employing a wide range of methodologies and model systems. The open structure of this group will provide a post-doctoral researcher with exceptional opportunities for collaboration. A commitment to independent and creative research as well as a strong background in molecular biology is required. Qualified candidates with a Ph.D. and less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience are invited to apply. The position is available immediately, but the start date is negotiable.
