Description
A post doctoral position is available in the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kentucky.
The focus of the research program is on the role of ABC transporters in lipid metabolism. This family of proteins is intricately involved in the transmembrane transport of a variety of lipids including phospholipids, bile acids, sterols and acyl-CoA esters of fatty acids. Consequently, these proteins play significant roles in the development of phenotypes associated with obesity that include dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, inflammation, cholestasis, and others.
This project focuses on the ABCG5 ABCG8 (G5G8) sterol transporter. This complex is the only known mechanism for the active excretion of cholesterol from the body. It is thought to reside in the apical domains of hepatocytes and enterocytes where it “pumps” cholesterol into the bile and intestinal lumen respectively. Our laboratory is focused on the post-transcriptional regulation of G5G8 with the goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for this regulation in vitro and in vivo. We will employ polarized hepatocytes as an in vitro model to determine the signaling molecules and dynamics of G5G8 complex stability, localization and activity. Proficiency in cell culture, signal transduction, protein chemistry and microscopy are essential.
Beyond the College of Pharmacy, the laboratory is actively engaged in a highly collaborative environment within the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Medical Center. The laboratory is a component of the Cardiovascular Research Center and Center for Nutritional Sciences and has ongoing collaborations with investigators in the Center for Toxicology and department of Pediatrics. Consequently, a successful candidate must be able to interact with students, fellows, basic scientists and physicians as a member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team. Attendance at regularly scheduled seminars and journal clubs; presentations at departmental, center and national meetings; and preparation of post-doctoral research proposals are expected.
The University of Kentucky is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer & Educator.
