Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position in the LondonCentre for Nanotechnology (LCN), in the area of cell and developmentalbiology. The aim of the project is to study the biophysics of cell sheetinvagination using an in vitro system based on microfluidic devices andlong term optical microscopy. Microfluidic devices will be made in theLCN clean-room for cell culture and utilised to force expression of geneconstructs in a stripe of cells in a monolayer growing in the device.Candidate genes will be expressed and their ability to induce cell sheetinvagination will be assessed using confocal microscopy. Once genes thatinduce invagination have been identified, the biophysical mechanismsgiving rise to cell sheet invagination will be investigated. Thecandidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively withcolleagues within LCN and UCL.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant area ofbiophysics, or cell and molecular biology. A strong background inmolecular biology, establishment of stable inducible cell lines, andconfocal microscopy is desired. Additional experience in any of thefollowing areas will be an advantage photolithography, long termimaging, epithelial biology, cell biophysics, generation of retroviralconstructs. The position will be for three years starting 15 September2008. Appointment will be made with a salary of ￡27,466 plus a Londonallowance of ￡2,649.
