The GKSS Research Centre is located in Geesthacht near Hamburg, Germany, with a further centre in Teltow near Berlin, and is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. With its approximately 700 employees it undertakes, in collaboration with universities and industry, research and development in the areas of coastal research, materials research, regenerative medicine, and structure research with neutrons and synchrotron radiation.

The Institute for Polymer Research located in Teltow/Berlin seeks applications from outstanding, highly motivated biologist, physican or biochemist for a position as Group leader in Biocompability Research Group Code-No. P 18.

The position is initially limited to three years but can be extended.

As successful applicant, you should have outstanding expertise in one or more of the following research areas:
evaluation of interactions between synthetic multifunctional materials and cells/tissues in vitro and in vivo, evaluation of biocompatibility according to EN/ISO-Standards, establishment of cell/tissues cultures, influence of biofilms, influence of surface tailored biomaterials on differentiation and vitality of cells, influence of mechanical and degradation characterisation of biomaterials on the fate of contacting cells/tissues.
The evaluation implies the assessment of critical structural aspects using up to date immonocytochemical and electromicroscopical methods as well as multiparallel expression analysis always in comparison to non alterated tissues in situ.

You have a highly degree of self-motivation, enthusiasm, good communication on skills and you work target-oriented. You have at least two years experience in leading a qualified research team. You are interested in building new competencies at the institute and to participate in sharing these internal and external co-operations. You have the ambition to work interdisciplinary in an international work environment offered at the institute.

You use your experience in project management to attract third party funding. Publishing of your results in scientific journals and at international conferences is an important part of your work.

The Institute has an excellent infrastructure. In cooperation with the other research groups of the institute there are manifold possibilities to extend your research projects to polymer synthesis, polymer processing, surface modification, characterisation of interactions with physiological environments as well as molecular modelling.
