Post-doctoral research associate in molecular nutrition - selenium function in colonic cells

Job Description:

Selenium is a micronutrient essential for human heath and low Se intake has been associated with colon cancer. Se functions in a number of selenoproteins including the glutathione peroxidases. A post-doctoral scientist is required to join an active research group working on molecular cell biology and nutrient-gene interactions, particularly selenoproteins. They will work with Professor John Hesketh and Dr Judith Hall to study the function of Se and glutathione peroxidases in colonic epithelial cell lines, particularly in relation to a specific genetic polymorphism in the GPX4 gene. The project is funded for 3 years by the Wellcome Trust. The work will involve using molecular techniques (e.g siRNA, microarrays, RTPCR) to assess selenoprotein expression, antimicrobial peptides and signalling pathways in epithelial cells in culture in response to changes in Se supply and bacterial challenges. The successful candidate will have an Honours degree and PhD in a molecular bioscience, preferably with experience in using molecular techniques to study nutrient-gene interactions.
