job description
Salary range £28280 to £34778 pa dependent on experience
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to work in the genomics of quantitative trait variation group. The research team focuses on analyses of associations of complex quantitative traits with genetic variation (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/research/faculty/nsoranzo/). The successful candidate will be involved in the analysis of metabolomics data in a project funded by the drug company Pfizer, searching for clinically-relevant biological features and integrating the data with ‘omics’ datasets such as gene expression and sequence data.
The role will be responsible for analyzing statistical associations of genetic variants with metabolomics profiles in a large UK population-based cohort, with the aim to discover and validate genetic loci underlying variation in human metabolism. Using systems-biology approaches, you will identify complex biological features associated with cardio-metabolic traits and disease.
Essential Skills
•PhD in a quantitative science, including but not limited to statistics, statistical genetics, systems biology or bioinformatics
•Firm grounding in statistical methods
•Documented experience with the use of statistical packages for analysis of highly-dimensional datasets
•Good scripting/programming skills in languages such as Phyton, Perl, C or C++
•Previous experience in working with large-scale genetic datasets
•Ability to work to tight timelines
•Ability to communicate efficiently with a diverse array of scientific expertise
•Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail
Ideal Skills
•Experience in working with metabolomics data
•Experience in intermediate trait modelling
•Strong interest in human disease and or population genetics
•Documented scientific writing skills
Other information
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. The role will be funded for 3 years, and commencing as soon as the post is filled.
Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £26,103. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above.
Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our websitehttps://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
